Modern Zoetrope Roundup
Get too much of one thing, and people crave something new. Go too far in one direction and there will be a pull to the other. I have a hunch that soon we'll be seeing a large renaissance of old school animation styles as a response to the smooth CGI that's saturated main stream movies for years. Recently, Wes Anderson gave us a taste of modern stop motion in Fantastic Mr. Fox, for example.
In any case, it's always fun to see new takes on old ideas, and zoetropes hearken back to the earliest days of man's experiments in animation. Take a look at some terrific examples of modern zoetropes below, and enjoy!#1 Pixar's Zoetrope
Masters of animation and storytelling - Pixar Studios - has a fantastic zoetrope using sculptures of
characters from their movies.
#2 The Cyclotrope
Tim Wheatley created the "Cyclotrope" for an experimental animation project for his digital animation
degree course. Clever!
#3 Demonstration Reel
Absorbing, energetic zoetrop-ish happenings, set to some good beats.
#4 Moray McLaren - We Got Time
Beautiful fluid animation. See the "Making of" video below.
#5 Making of "We Got Time"
#6 12-foot-tall Temperley London Circus Zoetrope
Layers upon layers of spinning, old-fashioned stills come to life.
#7 Battles - IPT2 - 3D Zoetrope Mapping
Take a three-dimensional zoetrope, add some selective colorful lighting, and you've got something some
people might call funktastic. Well, one person at least.
#8 Day 032 - A 3D Zoetrope
Another music-themed design, this time with the musicians embedded eternally within.
#9 Phonographantasmascope
You may have seen plenty phonographantasmascopes in your day, but have you seen this
phonographantasmascope? I think not.
