Guilty Pleasures

Postby DrayeArt » Thu May 29, 2008 7:51 pm

Since we just had a few threads about our favorite directors and films, how about one about films and directors we don't like to admit we like. Name your 10(or however many) most favorite embarrassing films/filmmakers- and why you like them(and nobody else does).

Here's mine(in no particular order):

1. Casino Royale (1967) - a complete pop tart. Disowned by nearly everyone who worked on it. Terrible reviews. Meandering direction, by, not one, but 5 directors(one of them John Huston). And it still managed to become the highest grossing pic of the year.

But who can argue with that Burt Bacharach(The Look of Love) score, psychedelic graphics and Ursula Andress. And I'm a sucker for Peter Sellars comedy style.

2. Caligula (1979) - You take out the porn, and it's actually a pretty good historical depiction of the emperor/madman. Director Tinto Brass(the Italian Russ Meyer) actually rebelled against producer/smut peddler Bob Guccione's pornographic inclusions. If you can get past some very graphic scenes(and the porn) it's actually Fellini-esque. And it did attract some stellar performers- Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and John Guilgud.

3. Titanic- The film everyone loves to hate. While I'm not crazy about the sappy underlying love story, or the "song", I have to admit, the last 45 minutes of this film are breath-takingly epic. One of the last times CGI was used properly.

4. The Crying Game- Real men don't cry, and real women aren't real men. I'm not big on romantic fare, but I have to admit, this is one of the most romantic films I've ever seen. I don't think it would have been as involving, if it had featured a hetero relationship. Of course, I could never tell this to my friends. lol A Neil Jordan tour-de-force that he has never equalled or bettered. Has a lot to say about relationships, racial, sexual, national and otherwise.

5. Anything by Russ Meyer(the American Russ Meyer)- Whew, that was close, I was having gender issues, for a moment. If you like Shakespeare(with large boobs), Miller(with large boobs) or Capote(well, I'm not going there), than Meyer is your guy. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Supervixens, Up, Mudhoney and Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill. The titles say it all.

6. Walking Tall- I'm not big on redneck chic. Dukes of Hazzard, wrastlin' and NASCAR are not my cup of tea. But Joe Don Baker and that stick, were a marriage made in film heaven. Cheapjack to the max, this became one of the most successful low budget films of all time.

7. Sergio Corbucci- The poor man's Sergio Leone(if you can wrap your mind around that). The Django series and a bunch of Leone knockoffs, are every bit as entertaining(if not as sumptuous) as the real thing. Hard to find, tho.

8. Little Nicky- Dumbass Adam Sandler flick, but that dog still cracks me up. And a Satan-referenced film every 2 minutes. Ossy Osbourne bites the head off the Devil, for Christ sakes.

9. I Spit on your Grave- Death Wish with a chick. Camilla Keaton(Buster Keaton's daughter) gets graphically raped, beaten, and almost killed, by four of the biggest lowlifes in cinema history, and comes back, with a big vengeance. This film is grade Z cheap 70s slasher/horror, but you get totally involved. The tub scene is not for the squeamish.

10. H. Gordon Lewis- There was Ed Wood, .....but then, there's Lewis! 2000 Maniacs, Gruesome Twosome, Blood Feast. Hell, he even starred Col. Sanders in one of his films. Cheap, terrible, and always fun to watch. Lewis is still trying for a comeback.

So, what are your guilty pleasures?

The only movie I can think of that I liked but doesn't seem like a "likeable" movie is Talladega Knights. xD Yeah. I mean, a lot of my friends liked it, but it was kinda like Napoleon Dynamite: so stupid that it's funny.

Zoolander is a flick I almost picked. Really stupid, but it does grow on you.

I didn't care for Highlander, mainly because of Christopher Lambert. Can't stand that guy. Mainly because of that Tarzan movie he made.

Victor Fleming. One of the few major American films I've never seen.
