A place that exists outside of time, he is taking the time to contemplate what is real, what is in the world of symbols, or eternity. This is the point where a change of conciousness takes place. The comings and goings of ones own life mean nothing to timeless symbols, and yet they can effect the artists life when contemplated on. The tree for example is a recurring theme within his work. What does it mean? Well symbolically the tree is incredibly potent. It symbolises the various levels of reality. The roots the underworld, trunk the temporal realm and the branches the heavens. The tree is used in all great traditions as a model for these themes. The trunk also is the connector of all three realms. Within it contains the axis of eternity, that which changes but cannot change. The unmoved mover.&lt;br /&gt; These are some ideas to consider while looking a Barlows work. I think you will see these things and many more. Keep an eye out for this brilliant artist in future years.
