Margaret Lynch
“My desire is to be formless in a world of formations; my spirit free in this life and beyond."Margaret Lynch is a award winning artist residing on the Big Island of Hawaii. 0riganaly from Seattle, Washington. She journeyed to Alaska in 1973 to become a fisherman. On the off seasons she would vacation on the Islands. She would reside on Maui for several months, then would fish the rest of the year in Alaska. The Island living captured her heart. 1989 she made the decision to make the Islands her home. She lived on Oahu for several years. In 1997 She started visiting the Big Island regularly. Her goal was to move there.
She wanted to do clay since in High School when she took pottery class. So when a friend offered her a chance to visit Fort Shafter Craft Center she jumped on the opportunity. They were doing a Raku workshop out back. The clay studio made her feel like she belonged. They invited her to come back next month to attend the workshop. She bought a bag of clay and the new journey began. Margaret worked out of the Craft center for four years. Started as a volunteer, she was teaching the Raku Workshop less then a year. Became group leader for The Raku Hoolaulea for two consecutive years. She taught a hand building class on saturdays. Her last year at the center she was asked to head up the ceramic studio being in charge of the the clay studio volunteers at the craft center.
Margaret joined Hawaii Craftsmen volunteered at many of there different functions.
In 2000 Margaret accomplished her goal and moved to the Big Island
Her work is derived from the many years of being on and near the ocean. Since settling on the Big Island her work has expanded to sculpting endangered species, and capturing Hawaiian culture. She is working on her hand built forms, her latest projects is her horse hair, naked raku pieces.
Her work has been exhibited here on the Big Island at many of the Juried shows.
Margaret was in the Hawaii Craftsmen Statewide Exhibition Juried Event on Oahu 2001, thru 2007. In 2003, Margaret presented her work in the" Spirit of Clay" exhibit appeared at the Volcano Art Center. Also in the same year Margaret opened her own Gallery in Hilo The Kilauea Art Gallery She featured some of the top artist on the Big Island . Margaret headed up running the Gallery for a year. She felt something was missing. She made the decision to go back to being a full time ceramic Artist. She was juried into The Pacific Hand Crafters guild in 2005. The summer of 2006 and 2007 Margaret was juried into Choochomam Festival of The Arts, Coupeville Arts & Crafts Festival and the Anacortes Art festival in Washington state. She entered The Coupville Art Gallery show and won third place. In 2007 she formed a group called the Lava Luster's and took them to the Raku Hoolaulea. She was honaorble mention for her horsehair piece.
Currently Margaret is a founding board member for the Paradise Studio Tour. She is also looking into starting a pottery guild in her community.
