It's a copper raising.
If you don't know what that is-it's a flat piece of copper that is hammered in a specific fashion over an anvil to turn it into a dish. Heated and annealed several times.

Is it hard to work with a curved surface like that, or does the grout make it work? A designer at my old job made a big fountain/pool using this mosaic technique - really neat. I like the mix of water and mosaic for some reason, maybe it's the way the light plays off all the pieces and the water together.

Not so dofficult , you just have to make the pieces smaller and use good glue so pieces don't slide off the rounded surface. Funny but the hardest part to do is the grout which goes on last.
