Just thought I'd comment since I'm a bird nut!
I like the idea of the rapid-sketch feel because it shows a certain energy. The composition is fine too. Where I would suggest improvement would be on developing a sense of depth so that the rushes become less dominant (become less well-defined) and the egret becomes the focus. To do this I would darken the area where rushes meet water (both elements), blur the rushes and soft belnd the water, and give more definition to the bird by using lighter and darker shading on its plumage. I might also introduce some sparkle in the water. Nothing major, just a hint of reflected light.

Thanks for pointers. Water always tricky !..... sort of getting there wth acrylics but finding using pencils/pastels more challenging. As for depth, now it's been highlighted I can see your point quite clearly. It's this kind of feedback I find so useful. Thank you.

I think with the water, Arthur, you are mostly there. As said just a few more touches will make it all jump out 3 dimensionally and spatially.
