Looks very well done, but rather bland. I think he needs a little sparkle in his eye......make him come 'alive'.

He's adorable! I agree, just needs a little sparkle in the eyes...one trick I do is after I fill in the eye, I take my eraser and circle around the pupil to lighten the irises just a little - leaving a darker outline of the iris, then darken the pupil again. If you can't get the little white spots of the "reflected light" any lighter, you can get a white chalk pencil to make them bright, and I promise that will make them look very realistic!

Otherwise I think he's great! With things like this, especially a dark animal like Smokey, erasers are your best friend :)

Are you using a regular charcoal pencil? Another thing you could try on future pictures is using the natural willow charcoal (michael's carries it, not too expensive), and using that to fill in the big dark spaces. It's very soft and when you use the eraser to highlight things, it comes up much easier than the pencil does.

Great job and keep posting, we want to see more!!!

Congrats on the new piece. I noticed you were having alittle trouble with the "fingerprint smudges," & I'd like to suggest the topic on drawing techniques, I think it's in the Art Studio thread here on the forum. It has a lot of valuable suggestions, tips, etc., that I think you'd really be interested in. Hope I've been helpful! :D

Keep on drawing . . . I do believe you've got lot's of talent!

Nah, I thought your suggestions were very helpful & constructive. It's good to help each other, that's what "Art Critique" is for . . . you did good! You should post those tips in the 'drawing techniques' thread, so more people could view them!

On the same theme as the eyes, the nose looks flat as well. Dog's noses don't usually highlight as one single band but as two spots with a darker area in between, but when the highlight is a singles band the front of the nose is darker. The top lip is in too much of a V and could benefit from straightening. Also, you could highlight the cheek bones, brow, and where the fur meets the leather of the nose to signify more form.

Hope this helps,

This is a very beautiful drawing! I think that if you add more high lights to the dog's coat the drawing would POP even more.
