Lounging Nude

Postby artofremy » Sun Mar 14, 2010 8:31 pm

This is a oil painting 41 x 22 based off venus of urbino by titian. I was just experimenting with different layers to create a body. The color got messed up when I took the picture. But you can get an idea of what it would look like. Thanks. http://www.remysart.com

I think you did a great job on this.
There's just a minor thing about the arms, and I wonder if her head is small, in proportion to her body?
[but perhhaps it's the style and could be it's like that in the original painting as well].
The colors are vibrant and I especially like the blue sky contrasting with the multicolors below. overall it's very good

I love paintings of a woman's nude body. I can't critique this.

Hi,

Titian is only in my opinion and it should stay so.An experiment based on such a piece I think is risky.

Nice to be reminded now and again what a natural woman looks like with a painting like this.

I would have to agree with you, Sorin.

I would consider this piece impressionistic, so for this reason, in my opinion the preportions of the body do not matter. Take some examples of the turn of the century artists like Picasso for instance. Otherwise, considering what Sorin said, I could be risking to expose my own naivety on the subject. (I was partying too much when I was supposed to be paying attention to art history in art school   )
My concern however is the collage of colours that she is lying on. From a distance it is not distracting from the main subject, but having a closer look it looks like she might be lying on a bed of mirepoux (chopped vegetables). Maybe some more detail could be established here, or maybe not, if it might take away the focus of the subject. I just think in this sense that it could be a little more 'finished'.

Titian was not an 'impressionistic' painter. Rather a very detailed realistic and magnificent one and risky to reproduce. I believe that is to what Sorin was referring.
