Since you yourself thinks it is missing something I will make a suggestion. Even in winter when trees shed their leaves you still see at least some on or around the tree. Unless the tree is totally dead there are some leaves either on the tree, in the wind, or piled up on the ground. Totally just an opinion.
If you are going to do something do it right or don't do it at all.

Yes, I agree with Huggertwo1, you might also leave a leaf or two on the tree.

Your light source and shadow are a bit off. Where you have darken the tree (and lightened it) do not quite correspond to your shadow's direction. Other than that I believe it is quite a competent painting and your detail on the tree itself is terrific. Personally, I would have blended the colors in the sky a little more, but that is rather minor. As for leaves, the tree just outside my window hasn't had a lief on it for a couple of months and the leaves that were on the ground have blown away long ago.

I hope that helps. :D

Did you use a flash when you took the photo of this piece. If you did i think that confuses the shadow issue. The flash looks as though it is creating light directly behind the tree which would cast a shadow differently than the angle it is at.

Also Mr Wingo has a very valid point, there are times when a tree may have no leaves at all on it's branches. There may not be any leaves on the ground either.

Really like this a lot especially the colors that were used. At the risk of sounding redundant if it were me, I'd maybe throw in a few leaves on the ground maybe kind of dry and brownish giving off the impression they're old and have been there a while and maybe I'd even toss in a squirrel or two playing around the tree as they often do at this time of year.
